History of The Rose
The Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ was founded in 1953 by the late Mother Moore and Dr. William Thomas Moore and was incorporated on December 10, 1958. The early years were spent with weekly prayer meetings in the homes of members and at their first meeting, $4.70 was collected. With that, the vow was made to save as much money as they could for a down payment on a building. After three years of saving, the church managed to save $4,032 which covered the required down payment for the first official Rose of Sharon Church home, 6401 Chene Ave, in Detroit. The church was located on Chene Ave for over 24 years until it was forced to relocate because of GM's poletown project in 1980. In January 1981, the Church secured a loan from National Bank of Detroit for a new property and in February 1981, they relocated to its current location, 1799 E. State Fair. Dr. William Thomas Moore, Pastor of the Rose of Sharon since it's founding, died in 1990 after 37 years of dedicated service. In 1992, Pastor Ronald L. Griffin was installed after Dr. Moore's passing and 8 years after taking the helm of the church, he implemented a $1 million expansion of the church in 1998. The new church was dedicated in 1999 including a nursery, new offices and an expanded sanctuary. |
